This Privacy Policy explains what information The Known Good collects, why, and what we do with it.
For purposes of this Policy:
- "Site" means the website at
https://theknowngood.com, its subpages, and our blog athttps://blog.theknowngood.com. - "The Known Good," "we," "us," and "our" refer to The Known Good, an independent personal project operated by Kerry Kier.
- "You" refers to any visitor to the Site.
By using the Site you agree to this Policy and to our Terms of Use.
The short version
The Known Good is a reference site. It has no user accounts, no logins, and no advertising. Our analytics are cookieless and count page views, not people — we set no tracking cookies, run no advertising trackers, and do not follow you across other websites. We do not sell, rent, or share personal information.
The only personal information we ask for is an email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to the newsletter. Everything else we hold is ordinary web server data that any web server records in order to function.
The sections below say the same thing in more detail.
1. Information we collect
1.1 Information you give us
Newsletter email address. If you subscribe to the newsletter, we collect the email address you enter. Subscription uses double opt-in: you will receive a confirmation email, and you are not added to the list until you confirm. We do not require a name and we do not ask for any other information.
Correspondence. If you email us — to report a data error, submit a correction, or ask a question — we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include in your message.
We do not operate user accounts, profiles, usernames, or passwords. No registration is required to read anything on the Site.
1.2 Information collected automatically
Our Site is served through Cloudflare. Cloudflare receives your IP address in
order to route, secure, and deliver each request, and processes it on our behalf under
its own privacy terms. It may set a strictly functional cookie (for example,
__cf_bm) for bot management and abuse prevention. See
https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.
Our own origin server records a log entry for each request containing the date and time, the page or file requested, the HTTP status code and bytes transferred, the referring URL if your browser sends one, and the user-agent string. These origin logs do not record your IP address. They are retained for 30 days and then deleted automatically.
Analytics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless measurement tool that records page views and referral sources without setting cookies, storing identifiers, fingerprinting your device, or tracking you across other websites. We use no other analytics, tracking pixels, session recording, or advertising technology. Because it sets no identifier, it cannot distinguish you from another visitor or recognize you on a return visit — it counts requests, not people.
Aggregate request counts are also visible to us through Cloudflare's own edge logging, which requires no code on the page and likewise does not identify individual visitors.
1.3 Information stored in your browser
Some Site features remember your preferences using your browser's local storage. This data stays on your device, is not transmitted to us, and is not associated with any identifier we hold. It currently includes:
- Your theme preference (light, dark, or system)
- Any weightings, filters, or comparison selections you set in interactive tools, such as the model recommender
You can clear this at any time through your browser's settings for site data.
2. How we use information
We use the information described above only for the following purposes:

We do not use your information for automated decision-making or profiling, and we do not build advertising or interest profiles.
Legal bases (for visitors in the EEA and UK). We rely on your consent for the newsletter, which you may withdraw at any time; and on our legitimate interests in operating a secure, functional website for server and edge request data and for responding to correspondence.
3. Who we share information with
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
We share information only with the following categories of recipient:
Service providers. A small number of vendors process data strictly on our instructions in order to run the Site:
- Brevo — email list management and newsletter delivery. Brevo receives your email
address and subscription status.

cookieless web analytics.

Legal disclosure. We may disclose information where we have a good-faith belief that disclosure is required by law, or is reasonably necessary to comply with legal process, enforce our Terms of Use, or protect the rights, property, or safety of our users, the public, or us.
Business transfer. If the Site or its operations are acquired, merged, or have assets transferred, information held may be among the assets transferred. Any recipient would remain bound by this Policy until it gives you notice of a change.
Aggregate data. We may publish aggregate, non-identifying statistics — for example, total monthly page views or the most-viewed model pages. Aggregate data never identifies individual visitors.
4. Our blog, and third-party content
Our blog. The blog at https://blog.theknowngood.com is our own publication — we
write and control its content, and this Policy governs what we do with information
from your visit there, just as it does on the main Site. The blog is delivered through
Hashnode, a third-party publishing platform that operates the servers behind it.
Hashnode therefore also processes visit data and may set its own cookies under its own
privacy policy, which we do not control. See https://hashnode.com/privacy.
Source data providers. The Site aggregates publicly published data from third-party sources listed on our attribution page. We fetch that data from them; they do not receive information about you as a result of your visit, and we do not send them your information.
Outbound links. The Site links to model providers, benchmark publishers, research papers, and other external resources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. Read their policies before using them.
5. How long we keep information
- Newsletter subscriptions — until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your record. Unsubscribe links appear in every newsletter email.
- Unconfirmed newsletter signups — if you enter an address but never confirm it, we keep it for up to 30 days so the confirmation can complete, then delete it automatically. An unconfirmed address is never added to our mailing list.
- Correspondence — for as long as needed to resolve the matter, and afterward only where a record is useful for corrections history or is required by law.
- Origin server logs — 30 days, then deleted automatically.
- Cloudflare edge data and Web Analytics — retained by Cloudflare under its own retention schedule, which we do not control. Analytics records are aggregate page-view counts and contain no identifier that could be traced back to you.
6. Security
We use reasonable technical measures to protect the information we hold, including HTTPS/TLS for all traffic, filtering and rate limiting at the network edge, restricted server access, and API credentials held server-side only and never exposed in page code.
No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, and you acknowledge that you provide information to us at your own risk.
7. Your rights and choices
Newsletter opt-out. Every newsletter email contains an unsubscribe link. You may also email us and we will remove you.
Access, correction, deletion. You may ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Because the only identifiable record we ordinarily hold is a newsletter email address, these requests are usually simple to fulfill. Email [email protected].
EEA and UK residents. Subject to applicable law, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, and object to processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, the right to withdraw consent at any time, and the right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.
California residents. Under the CCPA/CPRA you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how it is used and disclosed, the right to request deletion or correction, and the right to be free from discrimination for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA, and we have not done so in the preceding twelve months. We do not collect sensitive personal information.
Other U.S. state privacy laws. Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws may have comparable rights. Use the same contact address to exercise them.
We do not charge for these requests and we do not require an account to make one. We may ask you to confirm the request from the email address concerned so that we do not act on someone else's behalf by mistake.
8. International transfers
We operate from the United States. If you access the Site from outside the United States, your information will be processed in the United States and in the locations where our service providers operate. Where personal data is transferred out of the EEA or UK, our providers rely on recognized transfer mechanisms such as Standard Contractual Clauses.
9. Children
The Site is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 (or under 16 in jurisdictions where that is the applicable threshold), and we do not knowingly permit anyone in that age group to subscribe to the newsletter. If we learn we have collected such information, we will delete it. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact [email protected].
10. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We do not track visitors across third-party websites, so there is no cross-site behavior for these signals to suppress. Our practices already match what Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals request.
11. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy. When we do, we will revise the "Last revised" date at the top. Material changes will be announced on the Site, and — if the change affects how we handle newsletter subscriber data — by email to subscribers. Material changes take effect 30 days after notice. Clarifications and non-material changes take effect immediately.
